Comparison of abrasion resistant test methods

According to different abrasion methods, the abrasion resistant test instruments for fabric can be roughly divided into three types: flat grinding, curve grinding and folding edge grinding.

1 Flat grinding is the wear resistance for samples in a flat state, which simulates the wear state of the elbows and buttocks of the clothes. The most used in the industry is the Martindale wear meter. Commonly used standards are ASTM D4966, ISO 12947, GB/T 21196.

2 Curve grinding is the wear resistance of the model under the yield state at a certain tension. It simulates the wear of clothes on the knees and elbows. Commonly used standards are ASTM D3855, ASTM D3886

3 Folding edge grinding is the abrasion resistance for the folded edge of the experimental fabric, which simulates the wear state of the neckline, sleeves and hem. It bends the fabric to 180° to flatten it, causing the strict fold line to rub against the abrasive material thus to cause abrasion.


The experimental conditions of the three testing instruments are different, so the experimental results cannot be substituted for each other.
